Who invented sex dolls? The short answer
Nobody can be credited with inventing the sex doll. Popular articles often name sailors of the 1500s and 1600s, but research has found no records to support that story. The earliest documented commercial dolls were rubber figures sold in France in the 1850s, and the realistic silicone doll of today took shape in the United States in the late 1990s.
Vinyl inflatables sold by mail in the 1970s and the later spread of TPE fill the gap between those points. Each step came with a new material, and today’s Zelex dolls in platinum silicone and silicone-based SLE are the latest one.
The sailor myth: dames de voyage
The best-known origin story says that European sailors on long voyages in the 1500s and 1600s sewed companions from cloth and leather, called dames de voyage. It appears in many books and articles. A 2022 academic study published by MIT Press, Sex Dolls at Sea: Imagined Histories of Sexual Technologies, traced those citations back and found no archival evidence: the story grew out of fiction and fantasy that later writers repeated as history.
What the legend claims
- European sailors of the 1500s and 1600s made the first dolls
- They sewed them from cloth and leather and called them dames de voyage
What the record shows
- No archival evidence of sailor-made dolls, according to the 2022 study
- The term first appears in an 1893 story, where it does not mean a doll
- Sailors with dolls enter erotic literature only in the 1880s
- A 1908 sexology book on factory-made dolls drew on fiction and advertising
A 2025 review of the study in the International Journal of Communication sums up its point: the sailor tale lacks evidence. A later legend fares no better: the story of dolls made for soldiers during World War II is now considered a hoax.
1850s: rubber dolls in France
The documented history starts with rubber. From the 1850s, French catalogs of rubber goods sold femmes en caoutchouc, or rubber women, as consumer products. The first written mention known today is an 1855 article in Le Figaro about an exhibition of American rubber goods at the world’s fair in Paris. The 2022 study puts these rubber dolls, rather than the sailors, at the center of the real history.
In the early 20th century, life-size dolls turn up mostly in art. In 1918 an Austrian painter commissioned a life-size doll modeled on a real woman, and in the 1930s a German artist made dolls the subject of his work. Both belonged to the art world and had no link to mass production.
The 1970s: vinyl inflatables by mail
Mass-market dolls arrived with plastics. In the 1970s the main materials were vinyl and latex; silicone, which allows far more realism, came into use later. In the United States, inflatable vinyl dolls sold by mail through magazine ads: a 1971 ad offered one for $8.95 plus shipping, and by the end of the decade the price had climbed to $29.95. Those dolls bore only a passing resemblance to real people.
The distance to today is easy to measure. A Zelex SLE 3.0 is a cast body of 160–172 cm over a jointed EXP skeleton, with a soft head and a movable jaw, and its body maps list each height, weight and foot length.
Late 1990s: lifelike silicone
The modern realistic doll dates from 1996, when a full-size silicone doll built over a PVC skeleton with steel joints went on sale in the United States. That format, a cast silicone body around a posable skeleton, is still the basic design of realistic dolls, Zelex included.
The next big change was the material itself. In 2009 that doll switched from tin-cure to platinum silicone, which is less prone to tears and compression marks. Platinum silicone is what Zelex uses today for the Inspiration series, Fusion and the K-series.
TPE spreads, Zelex builds in silicone
TPE, a softer and usually cheaper material than silicone, came into common use. Demand grew as well: sales of sex dolls increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Zelex builds its current lines in platinum silicone and silicone-based SLE, and it explains the higher price of silicone in numbers: raw silicone costs about $7 per kg against about $4 for TPE, a failed silicone casting cannot be melted down and reused, and makeup goes on in three to five layers. Its 2023 hybrids paired a TPE body with a silicone Inspiration head; today its own store lists no TPE dolls.
Where Zelex fits in the timeline
Zelex belongs to the newest chapter. The company says it was founded in 2017; it is headquartered in Suzhou and produces in Zhongshan, Guangdong. Its lines use the materials this history led to: platinum silicone on Inspiration, Fusion and the K-series, and SLE, a silicone-based material Zelex makes in its own plant, all cast over articulated skeletons. The guide to who makes Zelex covers the company in detail.

Who invented sex dolls: FAQ
Who invented the first sex doll?
No one person did. The popular claim that sailors in the 1500s or 1600s invented cloth dolls has no archival evidence, according to a 2022 MIT Press study. The first documented commercial dolls were rubber products sold in France from the 1850s, and the modern full-size silicone doll appeared in the United States in 1996.
Did sailors invent sex dolls?
There is no evidence that they did. The dames de voyage story is repeated widely, but research tracing its sources found it rests on fiction and later retellings. The term itself first appears in an 1893 story where it does not mean a doll, and sailors with dolls enter erotic literature only in the 1880s.
When were silicone sex dolls invented?
In the 1970s dolls were mostly vinyl or latex, and silicone came later. The lifelike full-size silicone doll dates from 1996 in the United States, built over a PVC skeleton with steel joints. In 2009 that doll moved to platinum silicone, which tears less. Zelex uses platinum silicone today for its Inspiration, Fusion and K-series lines.
What were old sex dolls made of?
The oldest documented commercial dolls, sold in France from the 1850s, were made of rubber. In the 1970s the main materials were vinyl and latex, with cheap inflatables made of vinyl; silicone came later. Full-size silicone dolls with jointed skeletons followed in the late 1990s, and TPE later became common, especially in China. Zelex’s current lines use platinum silicone and silicone-based SLE.
When did Zelex start making dolls?
Zelex says it was founded in 2017, and its public record starts in January 2021. Its current lines launched from 2022 onward: Inspiration in 2022, SLE in 2023, Fusion in 2025 and the K-series in May 2026. The company is headquartered in Suzhou, China, with production in Zhongshan.
